One day while passing through the lobby of a Manchester hotel, Sir Thomas Beecham SPOTTED a rather distinguished-looking woman whom he recalled having met but whose name escaped him.

Pausing to say hello, Beecham suddenly remembered that she had a brother and - hoping for a clue - asked how he was doing and whether he was still employed in the same job.

"Oh, he's very well," the woman answered, "and still king."

Beecham, Sir Thomas (1879-1961) British conductor and impresario, founder of the London Philharmonic Orchestra (1932), artistic director of the Royal Opera House.
