A quorum is the minimal number of officers and members of a committee or organization, usually a majority, who must be present for valid transaction of business
Quorum first appeared in English in the 15th century as the genitive plural of the Latin pronoun qui "who."
Over time, the word came to be used as a noun, denoting the "number of justices who must be present in order to try the case," and in the 17th century this was generalized to "minimum number of members necessary for a valid meeting."
