(Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary)
--- Nosh comes from the Yiddish word "nashn", meaning to nibble, by way of the German "naschen", to eat a snack. The English language has been blessed by many words of Yiddish origin, primarily due to the large influx of Jews to large American cities like New York. Some of the words have become part of the everyday language:
schlepp = to carry something along with difficulty (from the German schleppen, to carry or drag)
schlock = damaged or second-rate merchandise
kvetch = a kvetch is someone who constantly nags or complains (ultimately from the German quetschen, meaning to pinch or squeeze)
chutzpah - having a lot of nerve, being bold or fearless
