The phrase knuckle down has its origin in the ancient game of marbles (marble = die Glasperle). Children of long-ago played variations of the game with sea-rounded pebbles, nuts, or fruit pits.

The name marbles comes from the 18th century practice of making the toy out of marble chips.

Since at least the 19th century, marble players have been using knuckle down to describe the act of placing their knuckles on the ground preparatory to shooting a marble. By the mid-19th century, the sense of concentration needed to knuckle down helped that phrase transcend the game and develop its metaphoric meaning "apply oneself seriously" (to work).
