ORIGIN

Coined by black feminist scholar Kimberlé Williams Crenshaw in 1989, intersectionality has been gaining increasing popularity, especially within the social sciences and feminist movements.

It gained increasing attention when Senator Kristin Gillibrand tweeted that “our future is … intersectional.” Google is currently showing over 3.300.000 results.

Also called "intersectional feminism", this branch of feminism asserts how all aspects of social and political identities discrimination (gender, race, class, sexuality, disability, etc.) overlap (or "intersect"). For example, race with gender in the case of a black woman.

Critics argue that intersectionality relies entirely on non-objective concepts such as systems of power, which themselves lack a material reality, and therefore an empirical basis for the study. This makes it an ideology, and not a proper sociological concept.
