18th Century African explorers were not noted for respecting the rights of INDIGENOUS cultures. Famed explorer James Bruce was once asked what sorts of musical instruments he had seen in Abyssinia (now Ethiopia).

"I think I only saw one lyre* there," Bruce replied. "Yes," George Selwyn muttered in reply, "and there is one less since he left the country!"

Bruce, James (1730-1794) British explorer noted for his discovery of the source of the Blue Nile at Lake Tana in northwestern Ethiopia (1770)
