WORD ORIGIN

As a noun, among other things bind refers to "a difficult, restrictive, or unresolvable situation." It is generally used with "in," as in "in a bind." This phrase is also expressed as "stuck in a bind" or "caught in a bind."

According to Charlie Daniels, even the devil can be in a bind if, as he points out, he is running a little short on souls. Most day-to-day situations in which people find themselves in a bind are a bit less dramatic however, and sometimes funny:

Winston Churchill was scheduled to address the nation one day. He was in a bind because he was running unusually late. He hailed a taxi in London's West End and ordered the cabbie to drive to the BBC as quickly as possible.
