"Take it easy: Money guru Suze Orman, who is in Cape Town this week, advises investors to pay off their debts and HOLD THEIR HORSES."

(Sunday Times, 23rd September, 2001)

Did you know?

This interesting phrase variously means:

Don't be in such a hurry!
Take it easy!
Watch your step!
Be patient!
Control yourself!

Etymology: In the old days of horse racing, the races were especially difficult to get started. The horses, feeling the nervousness of the inexperienced riders, were constantly breaking across the start-line and had to be called back. The earliest reference in print goes back to 1844 from the New Orleans Picayune.

Usage Tip: "Hold your horses" is a nice, informal way to stop someone speaking. Next time your telephone partner talks too quickly, or you want to interrupt a speaker and make your point, just say "hold your horses Jim!"
