"Robinson accepted Blair's appointment specifically to close tax loopholes such as offshore trusts - it's hardly any wonder that the Conservative Party WENT APE when the story broke."

An "ape" is any of the various large, tailless Old World primates of the family Pongidae, including the chimpanzee, gorilla, gibbon, and orangutan.

When we apply this word to humans the meanings are usually less than positive:

(1) to go ape = to become highly excited or angry

(2) an ape = a person who mimics or imitates (i.e. "Stop aping me!")

(3) an ape = an uncivilized, or rude person
