This interesting word has two meanings:

1 : to gather grain left by reapers

2 : to collect little by little or with patient effort

The original meaning "Glean" comes from the Middle English "glenen," which traces to the Middle French "glener," meaning "to glean." The French borrowed their word from the Late Latin "glennare," which also means "to glean" and which is itself of Celtic origin. Both the grain-gathering sense and the collecting-patiently senses of "glean" date back at least to the 14th century. The 20th-century broadening of the sense to mean "to find out, learn, ascertain" is quite common in business conversations.
