WORD ORIGIN

The verb “chirp” meaning “to make a short, sharp, happy sound like a bird”, and its associated adjective “chirpy”, is from the mid-15th century.

A variant of Middle English (late 14th century) chirken “to twitter”, from Old English cearcian “to creak”.
