“The longtime West Virginia Democratic senator — now an independent — is releasing a new book that details his rocky moments with former Presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden, as well as his cordial if frustrating relationship with President Donald Trump. Manchin’s book probably won’t be his last FORAY into the public eye.”

Burgess Everett — Semafor (18th September 2025)

Andrea Orcel’s Greek FORAY promises handsome gifts. A 26% stake in smaller Greek lender Alpha Bank (ACBr.AT), opens new tab is both lucrative and less controversial. A full takeover looks possible.

WORD ORIGIN

"Foray" burst onto the scene in the late 14th century as Scottish English for a "predatory incursion," derived from the verb forrayen (to pillage) and from the Middle English forreyer (raider or forager), borrowed from Old French forrier or fourrier (forager), ultimately from fuerre (fodder or provender). It evokes medieval scouts ravaging for supplies, evolving by the 19th century from literal loot-grabs to metaphorical bold steps into the unknown.

"Foray" demonstrates how military and agricultural terminology often intertwined in medieval society, where raiding for supplies was a common military tactic, and the same people who foraged for food might also conduct raids on enemy territory.

BEYOND THE COMFORT ZONE

The word "foray" started as something dangerous. Medieval soldiers would venture beyond castle walls to gather supplies or attack enemies. It was about survival and conquest.

Today, the word means something completely different. When a tech company makes a foray into artificial intelligence, or someone tries their first foray into writing, they're stepping into unfamiliar territory. The violence is gone, but the sense of risk remains.

A foray is more than just trying something new. It's about leaving one’s comfort zone with purpose. We might succeed or fail, but we’ll definitely learn something. Whether it's an artist exploring digital media or a scientist diving into quantum computing, every foray teaches us about our strengths and weaknesses.

What makes forays special is that they're temporary experiments. We can test the waters without fully committing. If things don't work out, you can retreat. If they do, we can dive deeper.

The journey of this word mirrors our own growth as people. We've moved from physical raids to intellectual exploration. Instead of pillaging for supplies, we're hunting for knowledge, opportunities, and new experiences. Modern forays are calculated risks that help us discover what lies beyond our comfort zone.
