IN THE PRESS

“There are two basic ways to conduct toponymic research — one concentrating on the etymology, meaning, and origin of TOPONYMS, and one focusing on the TOPONYMS of a region and examining patterns of these names.”

WORD ORIGIN

The word “toponym”, from the Greek tópos meaning “place” and ónoma meaning “name”. It literally translates to “place name”.

The term entered the English language in the late 19th to early 20th century, as geographical and linguistic studies became more formalized. It is commonly used in geography, linguistics, and cartography to refer to the names given to specific geographical features like cities, rivers, mountains, and other landmarks.

SMUGGLE OWAD into a conversation today, say something like:

“The approximate English pronunciation of the Welsh TOPONYM Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch is ‘Llan-vire-pooll-guin-gill-go-ger-u-chwurn-drob-ooll-llantus-ilio-gogo-goch’ … it means ‘Saint Mary's Church in the hollow of the white hazel near the rapid whirlpool and the Church of Saint Tysilio of the red cave’ “
