PHRASE ORIGIN

“The Full Monty” is a term that originated in the United Kingdom in 1997 in a film of the same name. The phrase means “the whole thing” or “the whole package”. The film tells the story of a group of unemployed Sheffield men who decide to become strippers in order to earn a living.

“The Full Monty” is now often used colloquially to refer to the most (or best) that you can have, do, get or achieve, or all that you want (or need).

Although the origin of the phrase is a mystery, there are many theories:

- From the phrase “the full Montague Burton”, an alleged reference to a three-piece suit made by a tailor with the same name.

- British field marshal Montgomery is said to have insisted on a full-cooked English breakfast, which of course would be “the full monty.” A related suggestion is the image of Montgomery walking in a parade adorned with all of his military medals.

- The casino at Monte Carlo, in which "The Full Monty" would equate to winning enough money to bankrupt the casino.

- A corruption of the expression “the full amount”.
