PHRASE ORIGIN

The word "entrepreneur" entered the English language in the 19th century. from the French verb entreprendre which means "to undertake" or "to begin”. “Silver” evolved from the Old English term seolfor.

“Silver entrepreneur” combines the two concepts. “Silver” referring to the greying hair colour associated with aging and the older demographic, and “entrepreneur”, a person who starts and operates their own business venture, taking on financial risk in pursuit of profit.

The use of "silver" to denote the elderly dates back at least to the early 20th century, the term "silver foxes" referring to attractive older men emerged around the 1920s.

This concept of older entrepreneurship has gained much more attention and use in recent decades, as more seniors choose to start businesses after retirement for income, activity, or personal fulfillment.
