WORD ORIGIN

Goatee is an Americanism from the mid-19th century that stems from the resemblance to the chin hairs on a male goat.

The original spelling “goaty” was later changed to “goatee”.

TO SHAVE OR NOT TO SHAVE?

Research by Sarah F. van der Land of Erasmus University Rotterdam examined whether wearing a beard in a LinkedIn profile picture affects a candidate’s chances of getting a job and whether this is dependent on the type of job vacancy.

The study is based on Ohanian’s (1990) three sub-dimensions of credibility and used three different job vacancies: (1) Architect for an expertise-job, (2) Back cashier officer for a trust-worthiness-job, and (3) Sales representative for an attractiveness-job.

The results of the study showed that bearded candidates are perceived as having more expertise than clean-shaven candidates and that a candidate’s perceived expertise is a significant predictor of the intention to invite the candidate for a job interview.

The study highlights the importance of visual cues in job recruitment and how they can affect a candidate’s chances of getting a job.
