XYZ
acronym

- eXamine Your Zipper, a subtle warning or code word to tell someone that their trousers zipper is open

---
WORD ORIGIN

The most common way to tell someone to zip up their trousers is the phrase "your fly is open" or "your fly is down." Fly is either a fold of cloth that covers the fastening of a garment or it can refer to the fastener itself. Because this phrase is so common, saying "XYZ" provides a way to help someone avoid the embarrassment of walking around with an open zipper without bringing it to the attention of other people.

While embarrassing, an open fly is usually considered humorous. The victim doesn't find it funny though. An open fly can cause little boys to be the subject of ridicule in school or make grown men forget what they wanted to say in a business meeting. Films have long made use of it as a gag and some Internet blogs spend time pointing out prominent people who have been caught with their fly open.

Levi Jeans launched an ad campaign for its 501 Jeans in the 1980s with the tagline "Button Your Fly." This referred to the unique design of the jeans having a button-fly as opposed to the traditional zipper. The tagline was a play on the "fly is down" phrase.
