WORD ORIGIN
Etymology: 1629, from the Italian gusto, meaning taste, and from the Latin gustus, "a tasting".
W. Clement Stone’s dictum may sound over-simplified in today’s complex world. Nevertheless, his philosophical outlook exemplified many of the "rags-to-riches" stories abundant in 20th and 21st century America.
Stone’s story of selling newspapers at the age of six in Chicago to help make ends meet (his father died when he was just three) is not uncommon. Years later the family moved to Detroit and opened an insurance business that grew to become one of the largest in the United States, making Stone a very rich man. After experiencing success in business, he began to write and publish motivational books and magazines.
Stone mass-produced inspirational adages like "Success is achieved and maintained by those who try and keep trying." And although many of his maxims are considered outdated, he lived to the ripe old age of 100. Maybe there is something to be said for living life with gusto!
