ORIGIN

1570s, from Modern Latin ‘ubiquitas’ everywhere, from 'ubi' where + 'que' any, also, ever.

Originally used by academic and scientific professionals, the term ubiquitous became popular in the business world in the 1990s. Since then, the word 'ubiquitous' has become ubiquitous.

Nowadays, management demands ubiquitous business presence. HR wants a ubiquitous corporate culture. Sales Service offers ubiquitous support. IT builds ubiquitous computing.

WATCHING GREENSPAN

During Alan Greenspan’s tenure as Federal Reserve Board chairman, market-watchers hung upon his every word – attempting to predict Fed-mandated interest rate changes, from his tone of voice to the apparent thickness of his UBIQUITOUS briefcase.

Greenspan was understandably careful about his choice of words. On one occasion, he met a friend at a conference and was casually asked how he was doing. “Actually,” Greenspan replied, “I’m not allowed to say!”
