superager
noun

- someone in their 70s or 80s who has cognitive or physical function equal to that of people decades younger

MacMillan Dictionary

WORD ORIGIN

The term “superaging” was first used by the neurologist Marsel Mesulam in 2007. Mesulam and his team studied individuals in their 80s and 90s who demonstrated exceptional cognitive abilities comparable to those of much younger adults. The phenomenon has since become a popular area of research in the field of aging and cognitive neuroscience.

HOW TO BECOME A SUPERAGER

Your brain has the ability to learn and grow as you age — a process called brain plasticity — but this requires training on a regular basis.

While genetics play a role in superaging, lifestyle factors also contribute. Tick 5 boxes to increase your chances of becoming a superager:

❏ Stay physically active. Regular exercise, even as little as 30 minutes a day, can have a significant impact on overall health and longevity.

❏ Cultivate a positive attitude. Studies show that having a positive outlook on life can lead to better health and longer life.

❏ Challenge your brain. Engage in activities that stimulate the mind, such as reading, learning a new skill or language, or doing puzzles.

❏ Maintain strong social connections. Regular social interaction can help reduce stress and improve mental health.

❏ Have a healthy and balanced diet. Include plenty of fruits, vegetables, lean protein, and whole grains in your diet to provide your body with essential nutrients and keep your weight in check.
