IN THE PRESS

“Yes, ROM-COMS have faltered in popularity since their 1990s heyday—but even as time passes, audiences are hungry as ever for banter, meet-cutes, and happy endings.”

The Cambridge Dictionary

WORD ORIGIN

From the first three letters of "romantic" and "comedy". Probably based on the earlier word "sitcom" (situation comedy).

HAPPY EVER AFTER

The central theme of a romantic comedy is the journey of two characters who meet, face challenges and obstacles that test their love, and ultimately reunite. The initial stages of the relationship may involve the characters starting off as adversaries, already involved with someone else, or held back by societal norms. However, the script often contains hints that suggest a deeper connection between the leads and their compatibility as a couple.

The climax of the film often involves the characters openly confessing their love and the film ends on a positive note, implying a happily ever after, though the specifics of this ending are not always specified.

The genre of romantic comedy dates back to much earlier works, such as Shakespeare’s “Much Ado About Nothing” and “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” Ultimately, the conclusion of a romantic comedy reinforces the idea that true love can overcome any obstacle and be the central force in one’s life.
