WORD ORIGIN
According to Brewer's Dictionary Of Phrase and Fable, the expression "to spirit away" first came into use in the 17th century in connection with the kidnapping of boys and young men (African slaves) and their transportation to the West Indian plantations. The 1811 Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue by Francis Grose also refers to kidnapping: to kidnap or inveigle away (inveigle means to lure someone through trickery). Spirit is applied here in the sense of being mysterious, such as in ghostly.
Although originally used in the context of kidnapping, the expression evolved over the years to a broader sense of removing someone or something without people knowing about it.
