In the United States, the period between the Thanksgiving holiday (the fourth Thursday of November) and Christmas has traditionally been the time when people get serious about Christmas shopping.
Retail stores seized this opportunity decades ago to kick-off the shopping season by holding merchandise sales on the Friday after Thanksgiving. The chaos these sales has sometimes created led to this day being referred to as Black Friday.
With the advent of online retailers in the mid to late 90s, the marketing industry created the term Cyber Monday (the Monday after Thanksgiving) as a way to encourage people to shop online. It quickly became one of the busiest online shopping days of the year.
Not content with Black Friday and Cyber Monday however, marketers then came up with Sofa Sunday to describe the Sunday after Thanksgiving when people lounge on their sofas with mobile devices to begin Christmas shopping in their pyjamas.
