WORD ORIGIN

Most sources believe the word "snog" first appeared during the 20th century, but the origin is unknown. Snog is a British term for kissing and cuddling that is also used in other English speaking countries such as New Zealand and Australia. Although seldom heard in the United States, it's slowly becoming part of American teenage slang thanks to a popular book by British comedian Louise Rennison called "Angus, thongs and full-frontal snogging."

The book is a fictional diary of a 14-year-old girl and is full of modern British teenage slang. To help young American readers, the book comes with a translation glossary that includes words such as:

fringe: a short bit of hair over the eyebrows. Americans call them "bangs."

naff: unbearably and embarrassingly out of fashion

Teletubby jimjams: pyjamas with kiddie TV characters on them

prat: a gormless oik. Gormless is slang for stupid and oik is a derogatory term for a student at another school.

wally: someone who acts like a prat, but in addition has no sense of fashion
