"Sideburns" has an interesting origin. It started out as a name, but then people added a letter. Then they mixed-up the letters in the name to make a whole new word.

Ambrose Everett Burnside, a Union general during the U.S. Civil War, was a public figure well-known for the long bushy whiskers he wore down the sides of his face. Other men liked the look and began growing similar whiskers themselves. Such whiskers, which became the height of fashion in the U.S. in the 19th century, were originally called "burnsides" after the general. By the late 1880s, though, someone rearranged the letters of "burnsides" to turn it into "sideburns" instead, and that new name stuck.
