RCMP acronym
- Royal Canadian Mounted Police
--- WORD ORIGIN
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (French: Gendarmerie Royale du Canada or GRC), is the Canadian national police service and an agency of the Ministry of Public Safety Canada. Mounted comes from the word "mount," meaning to furnish with a horse for riding. They are thus affectionately called the "Mounties."
The RCMP is unique in the world since it is a national, federal, provincial and municipal policing body. It provides a total federal policing service to all Canadians and policing services under contract to the three territories, eight provinces (except Ontario and Quebec), more than 190 municipalities, 184 Aboriginal communities and three international airports.
The RCMP traces its origins to the North-West Mounted Police (RNWMP), which was formed in 1873 when Prime Minister John A. Macdonald declared that the Canadian prairies needed a strong police force. The RCMP was officially formed in 1920 by the merger of the RNWMP with the Dominion Police (founded 1868).
The creation of this police presence was intended to solidify Canada’s claim to the west, to improve relations with native Indians and to eliminate the illegal whisky trade that was common in the West.
The Mountie is one of the most recognizable Canadian symbols. During the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s, Hollywood produced several movies featuring fictional Mounties. The famous saying that the Mounties "always get their man" is considered a Hollywood invention.
Surprisingly, the phrase can be traced to 1877 in a recorded story about the capture of three whiskey smugglers. A newspaper pointed out that the Mounties are "worse than bloodhounds when they scent the track of a smuggler, and they fetch their men every time."
