BACKGROUND

You'll often come across the abbreviation IFTTT when talking about IoT (Internet of Things). This free, web-based service creates chains of simple conditional statements to automate or simplify repetitive or boring tasks.

You'll remember this conditional language form from early childhood:

"IF you tidy up your room,… THEN you can watch TV" (1950 2000).

"IF you tidy up your room,… THEN you can play computer games" (2000-2008)

"IF you tidy up your room,… THEN you can check your facebook account" (2008-2018)

IFTTT functions with exactly the same logic. By connecting websites, applications, and electronic devices you can execute a vast array of useful tasks. For example:

IF I receive an email from Joanna,… THEN inform me with an SMS

IF I enter the meeting room,… THEN set my smart phone to silent mode

IF leave the building,… THEN turn off all the lights and set the security alarm

IF I mislay my mobile,… THEN re-set my silent-mode mobile to full volume and ring when I text "mobile where are you?"

IF there is heavy traffic on the A96,… then set my alarm to 45 minutes earlier

IF the weather remains dry,… THEN water the lawn at 17.00

So Dear Reader,

TODAY'S TALKING POINT

Increasingly, more and more domestic-appliance and electronic-device manufacturers are enabling IFFTY...

WHEN my alarm goes off,… THEN start the coffee machine and run my hot bath.

Hey, I just had an idea. Maybe we won't need a personal BATMAN after all. He's already here!

Have a great day,

Paul
