Proliferate is a back-formation of the noun proliferation, meaning the "formation or development of cells, which stems from the French proliferation, from prolifere "producing offspring," and from the Latin proles "offspring."
For some time the word proliferate was primarily the domain of scientists, particularly in the fields of medicine and biology. It was used to describe the rapid growth of cells (Researchers Examine Mechanisms That Help Cancer Cells PROLIFERATE). During the cold war however, proliferate and the noun proliferation became household words as the world witnessed the nuclear weapons race. This era gave us the now common phrases "nuclear proliferation" and "nuclear non-proliferation treaty."
On a less serious note, merchandising can also be subject to proliferation. Pierre Cardin, who gained fame with his collection of exclusive fashion clothing, expanded his business in the 1980s by selling licenses for the Pierre Cardin brand. The licensing operations proliferated so much that at one point his name was found on as many as 800 products, including toilet seat covers.
