noun phrase, slang

One-dollar man is a play on the expression Six Million Dollar Man, a popular American television series in the 1970s. In the show, an American astronaut is severely injured in an airplane crash and is "rebuilt" in an operation that costs around $6 million ($31 million in today's inflation-adjusted dollars).

His right arm, both legs and the left eye are replaced by "bionic" implants that enhance his strength, speed and vision far above human norms. He transforms into a Superman of sorts and can run as fast as 97 km/h. His eye has a 20:1 zoom lens and infrared capability while his limbs have the power of a bulldozer. He uses his enhanced abilities to work for the OSI (Office of Scientific Intelligence) as a secret agent (and as a guinea pig for bionics).

These days, a "super" chief executive officer can cost a company large sums of money to recruit and maintain. Multi-million dollar/euro annual salaries are more common than not for CEOs of Fortune 500 companies. The remuneration usually consists of a fixed salary plus bonuses and company stock. Some executives, in an effort to save the company money or as a symbolic gesture during difficult economic times, have taken to reducing their annual salary to $1, because they are already very wealthy. This eventually gave rise to the expression "one-dollar man."
