To be called a NIMBY can be a devastating insult, undermining one's well-argued case and labelling it simply a statement of self-interest.

WORD ORIGIN

The New Dictionary of Cultural Literacy defines NIMBY as a person who resists unwanted development, such as manufacturing plants, prisons, power companies, or chemical companies in his or her own neighbourhood or town.

NIMBY is a derogatory term rooted in the belief that people who protest development are putting their own interests ahead of the needs of society, and that their objections are selfish rather than principled.

It was first recorded around 1980 and found wider usage in Britain in the late 1980s. This was thanks to then Environmental Secretary Nicholas Ridley, who publicly accused the British middle-class of "crude nimbyism" for their opposition to new development.

Ridley's own actions, which involved opposing the development of new homes that would have interfered with the view from his country home in the Cotswolds, confirmed the belief of many people that NIMBY attitudes are hypocritical.
