WORD ORIGIN
Circa 1470. Newfangled was formed from the Old English adjective neufangel (from around 1250), which literally meant to capture (fang) something new (neu).
Fang is a derivative of the Old English fon, meaning to capture. The context of something recently coming into fashion was first recorded around 1533.
Note the relationship to the German "neu" and "fangen".
