Killer App is short for "Killer Application" meaning an absolutely brilliant technical solution (originally in computer programming) which turns into a highly successful business product.

Spreadsheets have been used by accountants for hundreds of years. Computerized or electronic spreadsheets are of much more recent origin.

Dan Bricklin was the "father" of the electronic spreadsheet. He co-invented/created the software program VisiCalc. We can look back and recognize that VisiCalc was the first "killer application" for personal computers back in 1979.
