---
As one might guess, flippant stems from the verb "flip," which among other things means to turn over or around, especially with a light quick motion, such as flipping through a book (turning the pages).

Flip is used in several expressions that refer to becoming excited or overly emotional about something, including "flip one’s lid’ and "flip out."

Flip is also used as a verb to describe changing one’s opinion (The mayor flipped on the decision to build a new bridge), as well as to refer to someone who turns against friends, like a criminal who testifies against his cohorts (The government was successful in flipping the mafia boss).

Flip evolved as a contraction of the 16th century words "fillip" and "philippen" meaning to flip something with the fingers or snap the fingers, which is probably of imitative origin.
