The expression empty nesters stems from the practice of young birds that leave their nest when they are old enough to take care of themselves, thus leaving it empty. The act of leaving home is sometimes referred to as "flying the coop" or "leaving the nest."
Many empty nesters decide to buy smaller homes after their children leave and build a life for themselves. This has made empty nesters a target group for real estate professionals.
Some couples find this situation difficult to deal with. Psychologists call it the "empty nest syndrome". Psychology Today magazine describes it this way:
"Empty nest syndrome refers to feelings of depression, sadness, and/or grief experienced by parents and caregivers after children come of age and leave their childhood homes. This may occur when children go to college or get married. Women are more likely than men to be affected; often, when the nest is emptying, mothers are going through other significant life events as well, such as menopause or caring for elderly parents."
The magazine also points out that an increasing number of adult children between 25 and 34 still live at home. They are sometimes referred to as "boomerang kids," meaning they temporarily leave home and then return because of financial difficulties, divorce or the decision to extend their education.
