BACKGROUND

Eff is the phonetic equivalent of the letter "F".

In an annoying situation when one feels like saying a four-letter word that starts with the letter F, an alternative is to say "effing" instead of the obscene "F-word". It's like using a swear word without swearing.

In this case "effing" is synonymous with words like the very British bloody as well as blooming, blinking, flaming, damned, fricking/freaking (made-up words that "coincidentally" begin with F).

Although "effing" is intended as a less-offensive substitute for the famous F-word, some people may still find it objectionable. In general, caution is advised when using it.

On the other hand, all languages have their colourful sides, which we at least need to understand.
