PHRASE ORIGIN
The phrase “drop the other shoe” seems to have been known for most of the 20th century. A cartoon on the 15th February 1943 about Hitler appeared in the New York World-Telegram was entitled “Waiting for That Other Shoe to Drop!”
The original source, from the early 20th century, centers around the tenements of New York City where apartments were built with bedrooms on top of one another. It was common to hear your upstairs neighbor take off a shoe, drop it, and then repeat the action. Thus the phrase became shorthand for waiting for something you knew was coming.
