“Be prepared” is the sensible motto of the boy scouts. Yet the fast spread of covid-19 reveals that the world largely ignored that wise dictum. With one CONSPICUOUS exception that we shall explain, most countries didn’t have adequate plans or stockpiles for confronting a pandemic.

WORD ORIGIN

Conspicuous (1545) was borrowed from the Latin conspicuus, meaning visible or striking.

One of Germany’s most popular tourist attractions, and likewise one of its most conspicuous, is Neuschwanstein, the elaborate castle erected at the foot of the Bavarian Alps by the eccentric King Ludwig II. For most Britons and Americans, no first visit to Germany is complete without a tour of this palatial estate.

Unknown to many Europeans however, the United States has its own Neuschwanstein located on a hill overlooking the splendid Big Sur coastline of California between San Francisco and Los Angeles. Hearst Castle was the brainchild and fantasy of William Randolph Hearst I, the early 20th century millionaire publishing magnate whose life was fictionalised in Orson Welles’ Hollywood classic Citizen Kane.

Hearst’s inspiration for the castle stemmed from a European vacation as a child, as well as a drive across Europe during his honeymoon. Together with architect Julia Morgan, he spent 28 years constructing the castle on 250,000 acres of ranch land inherited from his mother. He eventually named it La Cuesta Encantada – or The Enchanted Hill – building a total of 165 rooms and 127 acres of gardens, terraces, pools and walkways. The estate encompasses nearly 28,000 square metres and includes 56 bedrooms, 41 fireplaces, 61 bathrooms and 19 sitting rooms.

The Hearst Corporation donated the castle to the People of the State of California in 1957. The Hearst San Simeon State Historical Monument dedicated the opening of its visitors centre on June 2, 1958 and has been offering tours since.
