WORD ORIGIN

When one thinks of cheerleaders, what immediately comes to mind are young girls at American football games who lead the crowd in cheering and yelling for their team. Cheerleading first appeared in the United States in the late 1880s as a way to encourage school spirit at athletic events.

Legend has it that the first school cheerleader was a young male student at the University of Minnesota in 1898. After going solo for a while, he decided to organise a team of six male students and the world's first known cheerleading squad was born.

The late 19th century and early 20th century women's emancipation movement opened the door for women to become cheerleaders in the 1920s. Today, it's estimated that women make up around 97 percent of the world's cheerleaders. Although it's not unusual to find cheerleaders at sporting events around the world, organised cheerleading remains a largely U.S pastime.

Cheerleaders can also be found outside the sports world, but in a somewhat different sense. In this context, cheerleaders are people who are vocal about a specific cause or development and lobby others for their support.
