WORD ORIGIN
Candid (circa 1630) stems from the Latin candidum, meaning "white, pure, sincere," from candere "to shine."
Perhaps one of the most well-known uses of the word candid is in the name of the long-running U.S. television show Candid Camera, one of the first "reality shows."
Candid Camera, which was created and produced by Allen Funt, initially began on radio as Candid Microphone on June 28, 1947. After a series of short films, also titled Candid Microphone, Funt's concept came to television on August 10, 1948.
The format has appeared on network, syndicated or cable television in every succeeding decade, as either a regular show or a series of specials. Interestingly, different versions of candid camera have appeared in many different all over the world, indicating the universality of the practical joke.
A British version of the show ran in the 60s and 70s and an Australian version was launched in the late 90s.
