WORD ORIGIN

The term brick and mortar stems from the materials used to construct buildings. It differentiates between companies that own physical facilities to transact face to face with the customer and those that only have an online presence. Many companies operate both business models, which gave rise to the term "bricks and clicks."

Of the many different business models such as e-commerce, home businesses, mail order, and brick and mortar, there are advantages and disadvantages to each. Some types of businesses are best served by, or even require a hands-on base of operations to provide their products or services, such as auto repair, healthcare, restaurants, and many service businesses.

Prior to the Internet, a brick and mortar business was standard for nearly any company that sold goods. Nowadays, the business model has expanded to include e-commerce, in many cases foregoing the need of a commercial building all together, a trend that is being accelerated by the Corona pandemic.

When used by itself as a noun, brick and mortar refers to a business. Although technically redundant, it is commonly used as an adjective in phrases such as "brick-and-mortar business" or "brick-and -mortar company."
