acnestis
noun

- The part of the back that one cannot reach to scratch

WORD ORIGIN

The etymology of acnestis is quite fascinating—and likely different from what you’d expect. It comes from the Ancient Greek knēstis, meaning the spine or backbone.

The Greek prefix a- means “not” or “without,” and when combined with knēstis (spine), it forms acnestis—literally referring to the part of the spine that cannot be reached: the unscratchable spot on the back.

The term appeared in specialist literature in the mid-18th century, introduced by the English physician Robert James (1703–1776).

Acnestis describes a universal experience—and may even explain why dogs roll on the ground in apparent ecstasy: they’re scratching their acnesta.

THE UNSCRATCHABLE ITCH

There is a spot that you can't scratch
Right between your shoulder blades,
Like an egg that just won’t hatch
Here you set and there it stays.
Turn and squirm and try to reach it,
That pesky patch, you just can't treat it,
Twist your neck and bend your back,
Hear your elbows creak and crack,
Hold your breath and stretch and pray,
Only just an inch away,
Worse than socks that never match,
Is that cursed spot you just can't scratch.

MEMORY TRICK

Acnestis sounds a bit like “agony nest” — that annoying itchy spot on your back that becomes a nest of agony when you can’t reach it :-)
