WORD ORIGIN
Retro as a stand-alone adjective has been around since the 1970s. It’s a shortened form of retrograde, which was borrowed from the Latin retrogradus (going backward). According to the Online Etymology Dictionary, retro was first used to describe a revival of clothes fashions inspired by Eva Peron in the late 1960s.
Retro is used as a prefix in words like retroactive, retrospect, retrofit and retrorocket (a rocket engine that provides thrust in the opposite direction, thus causing it to slow down).
