WORD ORIGIN
A “minimoon”, as the name suggests, is a shorter and therefore usually cheaper trip taken by a newlywed couple. During tough economic times, the minimoon is a practical alternative to longer and more expensive honeymoons.
Speaking of which, why are they called honeymoons anyway? One suggestion is that “honeymoon” stems from the Nordic word hjunottsmanathr, which apparently referred to the practice of kidnapping the bride and hiding her until the family abandoned the search and stopped looking.
Another theory derives from an ancient custom of the bride and groom drinking a honey-laced potion (such as mead) on the first month of their marriage, thereby keeping the young couple in amorously good spirits.
