Did you know?
infobesity noun, colloquial
- an excess of information, especially when this makes it more difficult or impossible to make rational decisions
(MacMillan Dictionary)
--- ORIGIN
The term was popularized by Alvin Toffler in his bestselling 1970 book Future Shock.
--- Investment firm Bain Capital offers a good description in the context of corporate life:
"Like conventional obesity, infobesity has many sources. The never-ending stream of emails and voicemails. The PowerPoint presentations that dominate so many meetings. The endless reports from finance, marketing, cross-functional teams and external researchers.
--- SYNONYMS
information overload, information glut, data smog, "information pollution", infoxication
"TMI" (too much information) is an initialism alluding to information overload and is often used in jest.
"TL;DR" (too long; didn't read) is another initialism alluding to information overload, but this one is normally used derisively (spöttisch).
--- NOTE
If infobesity is the disease, then "analysis paralysis" would be a severe symptom.
