PHRASE ORIGIN

“Deep six” is an English phrase of likely nautical origins, most commonly hyphenated and used as a verb. It indicates a water depth of 6 fathoms (11 meters) as measured by a sounding line (Lotleine).

The “leadsman” called out the depth as he read it off the line. Six fathoms would be reported as “by the deep six.”

The phrase likely derived from the idea that something thrown overboard at or greater than this depth would be difficult if not impossible to recover.
