'Bucolic' ultimately stems from the Greek boukolos meaning 'cowherd' or a 'herdsman' (bous = cow + kolos = tending, taking care of), by way of the Latin bucolicus. In addition, the Greek kolos is related to the Latin colere, 'to till' or 'cultivate the ground' or 'to inhabit', which is the root of colony.

Furthermore, the Middle Irish búachaill and Welsh bugail meaning 'shepherd' are Celtic words from the same root as the Greek boukolos. What this all comes down to is that a Greek term for cowherd evolved over the centuries to an adjective that means country-like or rural.
