No discussion of "zero-day bug" is complete without first examining the word "vulnerability." As the Internet site vocabulary.com points out, vulnerability is the state of being or appearing to be open to injury (from vulnus, the Latin word for wound).

Before the computer age, the adjective vulnerable was primarily used to describe a person who is susceptible to emotional injury or a physical illness. The computer industry has meanwhile "hi-jacked" this term for its own use, turning vulnerability into a common description for a flaw or "bug" in a computer system that can be exploited by hackers.

The term zero-day bug derives from the age of the flaw or bug, meaning how long has the software developer been aware of the problem. If the bug is unknown, then it's still at day zero. So a zero-day bug is one in which there is still no known fix to the problem.

A zero-day bug is also known as a zero-day attack, zero-day threat or zero-day vulnerability.
