Did you know?
young-old term
- older adults ranging in age from 55 to 75 who lead active lives
--- WORD ORIGIN Psychologist and social scientist Bernice Neugarten (1916-2001) coined this term in her 1974 book, Age Groups in American Society and the Rise of the Young Old. Neugarten wrote that the rise of the “young-old,” ages 55 to 75, was distinguished from middle age by retirement, but also distinguished from the “old-old” by their energy and active social involvement.
Through their active lifestyles and disposable incomes, the young-old segment is influencing many political and social issues today, particularly health care and pension reforms. The retail industry is also beginning to focus on this group's buying power.
For those of you who don't fall into this demographic category, here are a few more:
- middle youth = what we used to call middle age.
- Thirtysomething = someone between 30 and 39. This expression was created in the 1980s to describe the baby boom generation, which is now in the young-old category.
- Generation X = generally people born between 1960 and 1980, which followed the post-Second World War baby boom, particularly in the United States.
Tweenager = young children between the ages of 7 and 11 with money to spend.
