For those who have siblings, the concept of impunity is likely very familiar. Did it seem like your brothers and sisters always got away with anything and everything while your parents punished you for the slightest offence? And did your siblings care if you got the short end of the stick? That's doubtful. As Miguel de Cervantes wrote centuries ago in his classic novel Don Quixote (translated from the Spanish of course):

"Love and war are all one. It is lawful to use sleights and stratagems to attain the desired end."

Today we would say that "All's fair in love and war," an expression that first appeared in 1850 in a novel from Frank Smedley called Frank Fairlegh: Scenes from the Life of a Private Pupil:

"You opened the letter!" I exclaimed.
"Of course I did. How was I to read it if I hadn't? All's fair in love and war, you know . . ."

The term impunity is from the Latin impunitas by way of the Middle French impunité (14th century) and was formed from "im" (not, opposite of) and "poena" (punishment).
