A future prime minister shows alacrity

Former Canadian prime minister William Lyon Mackenzie King briefly worked as a reporter with the Toronto Globe before embarking on a political career. But even then, he demonstrated an alacrity that he also found useful in politics as illustrated by this story from one of his colleagues.

Toronto newspapers were making much of the mysterious disappearance of a young woman. Armed with a description of the girl, King set forth from the Globe office in a spirit of high resolve. He was determined to find her, or die trying. The first day he had no luck, although he walked miles of streets and gazed somewhat boldly into the faces of numerous pedestrians.

On the afternoon of the second day he came upon a young lady who seemed to fulfil the police description. King approached the woman and invited her to accompany him. She accepted, with a certain degree of "sensual" alacrity. To her great surprise, she quickly found herself in the Globe office. King was explaining his triumphant search when the hard-nosed city editor emerged from his office. He looked at King. And then he looked at the girl, whom he dismissed, curtly and decisively. To the future prime minister he said: "King, if you ever again bring a prostitute into this office you're fired!"
